42cm (16.5") White Beauty Dish with Grid

A beauty dish sits between a bare reflector and a softbox. You get light that's soft enough to flatter skin but with more shape and contrast than a softbox gives, so cheekbones and jawlines read clearly. The round face also leaves a neat circular catchlight in the eyes, a lot like the sun would.

Inside, a small deflector covers the bulb and throws the light back onto the white interior, which spreads it evenly across the dish. White gives a warmer, gentler result than a silver dish, with fewer hard specular highlights on skin. A diffuser cap slides over the rim when you want it softer still, and the included honeycomb grid clips on to narrow the beam and keep spill under control.

That spill control is handy when you're shooting in front of a painted canvas backdrop. With the grid on, the light stays on your subject and the backdrop falls off naturally behind them, so you decide how bright the background reads with a separate light rather than fighting stray light from the key.
