This information does not reveal your specific identity but may include device and usage information, such as your IP address, browser and device characteristics, operating system, language preferences, referring URLs, device name, country, location, and other technical information. This is primarily needed to maintain the security and operation of our Services, and for our internal analytics and reporting purposes. Like many businesses, we also collect information through cookies and similar technologies. The information we collect includes log and usage data, device data, and location data.
2. How do we process your information?
In Short: We process your information to provide, improve, and administer our Services, communicate with you, for security and fraud prevention, and to comply with law. We process your personal information for a variety of reasons, including: to facilitate account creation and authentication; to deliver and facilitate delivery of services; to respond to user inquiries and offer support; to send administrative information; to fulfil and manage your orders, payments, returns, and exchanges; to enable user-to-user communications; to request feedback; to send you marketing and promotional communications (in line with your preferences — you can opt out at any time); to deliver targeted advertising; to protect our Services; to identify usage trends; to determine the effectiveness of our marketing; and to save or protect an individual’s vital interest.
3. What legal bases do we rely on to process your information?
In Short: We only process your personal information when we believe it is necessary and we have a valid legal reason to do so under applicable law. If you are located in the EU or UK, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and UK GDPR require us to explain the valid legal bases we rely on: consent; performance of a contract; legitimate interests; legal obligations; and vital interests.
4. When and with whom do we share your personal information?
In Short: We may share information in specific situations described in this section and/or with the following third parties. We share personal information only with the service providers who help us run the shop, and only what each needs for its job:
- Stripe — payment processing at checkout (your payment details go directly to Stripe).
- Transglobal Express and its courier partners (e.g. DHL, UPS) — your name, delivery address, email and phone number, so your order can be delivered and tracked.
- Supabase and Vercel — the platforms that host our website, customer accounts, and order records.
- Our email providers — to send order confirmations, account emails and (only if you subscribed) our newsletter; every marketing email includes an unsubscribe link.
- Google Analytics — only if you accept analytics cookies via our cookie banner (see section 6).
- Anthropic— if you use the chat assistant on our site, the messages you type into it are processed by Anthropic’s AI service to generate replies. Please don’t enter personal details into the chat that aren’t needed for your question.
We may also share information in connection with business transfers (any merger, sale of company assets, financing, or acquisition), and where required by law. We never sell your personal information.
5. What is our stance on third-party websites?
In Short: We are not responsible for the safety of any information that you share with third parties that we may link to or who advertise on our Services, but are not affiliated with our Services. The inclusion of a link towards a third-party website, service, or application does not imply an endorsement by us. Any data collected by third parties is not covered by this privacy notice. You should review the policies of such third parties and contact them directly to respond to your questions.
6. Do we use cookies and other tracking technologies?
In Short: Only essential cookies by default; analytics runs only if you accept it. We use a small number of strictly necessarycookies and similar browser storage: keeping you signed in to your account and remembering your basket. These are required for the shop to work and don’t track you across other sites. Analytics (Google Analytics) is off by defaultand only starts if you click “Accept” on our cookie banner; declining keeps it off, and you can clear your browser’s site data at any time to be asked again. We also keep a fully anonymous count of page visits that uses no cookies and stores no IP address or personal information.
If you accept the cookie banner, we may also collect first-party usage insightsto help us improve the shop: which pages are viewed, how they are scrolled, and where on the page visitors click or tap, which we may review as an anonymised visual summary of a browsing session. This is built and hosted entirely by us — no data is shared with any third party. It is designed so it cannot capture personal information: anything typed into any field (names, addresses, logins, search terms) is replaced with placeholder characters on your device before anything is sent to us, payment forms are never captured, no IP address is stored, and no identifier links the session to you. These insights are kept only briefly and deleted automatically, typically within 30 days. Declining the banner keeps all of this off. The same applies in our shopping app if you choose “Allow” when asked about anonymous usage sharing — there we collect only screen visits and tap positions, never screen contents, and you can decline at the prompt.
7. How long do we keep your information?
In Short: We keep your information for as long as necessary to fulfil the purposes outlined in this privacy notice unless otherwise required by law. No purpose in this notice will require us keeping your personal information for longer than twenty-four (24) months past the start of the idle period of the user’s account, except that order and invoice records are retained for up to six (6) years as required by UK tax and accounting law. When we have no ongoing legitimate business need to process your personal information, we will either delete or anonymise it, or securely store it and isolate it from any further processing until deletion is possible.
8. How do we keep your information safe?
In Short: We aim to protect your personal information through a system of organisational and technical security measures. However, despite our safeguards, no electronic transmission over the Internet or information storage technology can be guaranteed to be 100% secure. Transmission of personal information to and from our Services is at your own risk. You should only access the Services within a secure environment.
9. Do we collect information from minors?
In Short: We do not knowingly collect data from or market to children under 18 years of age. By using the Services, you represent that you are at least 18 or that you are the parent or guardian of such a minor and consent to such minor dependent’s use of the Services. If you become aware of any data we may have collected from children under age 18, please contact us at hello@handpaintedbackdrops.co.uk.
10. What are your privacy rights?
In Short: In some regions, such as the European Economic Area (EEA), United Kingdom (UK), and Canada, you have rights that allow you greater access to and control over your personal information. These may include the right to request access and obtain a copy of your personal information, to request rectification or erasure, to restrict the processing of your personal information, and, if applicable, to data portability. If you are located in the EEA or UK and you believe we are unlawfully processing your personal information, you also have the right to complain to your local data protection supervisory authority. You may withdraw your consent at any time, and you can unsubscribe from our marketing communications at any time by clicking the unsubscribe link in our emails or by contacting us.
11. Controls for do-not-track features
Most web browsers include a Do-Not-Track (‘DNT’) setting. We honour it:when your browser sends a DNT signal, our analytics stays off entirely and the cookie banner isn’t even shown, regardless of any earlier choice.
12. Do California residents have specific privacy rights?
In Short: Yes, if you are a resident of California, you are granted specific rights regarding access to your personal information. California Civil Code Section 1798.83 (the ‘Shine The Light’ law) permits our users who are California residents to request certain information about our disclosure of personal information for direct marketing purposes.
